Irish Pro League 2017 Finals: Kuba “kas” Capala & Dylan "deKayy" Keane Interview

This interview was audio recorded on the afternoon of the 3rd of September.

Here with kas and deKayy from Different Gravy, How’s it going boys?

deKayy: Not bad. Should have taken overpass, should have closed it out whilst we had the chance.

You just finished down two – one against Nobodys. Are you happy at all that you took a map or did you realistically think you could win the game?

deKayy: I thought we could have won overpass had we strung a few more rounds together, but going into inferno after the first few rounds lost, it looked bleak. But I expected to take a map off them and honestly I expected a close series, so a bit disappointed.

Have you guys been practising at all before this event?

kas: No we pracced twice, on the Monday and the Thursday. An hour each.

So you’re just kind of a mix coming in.

kas: Yea, basically.

deKayy: Not put much time into the game either like..

Is this mix a permanent fixture? We’ve had the same three – four people at Nobodys for a few LANs, Different Gravy; Is this going to be the same sort of thing?

deKayy: I don’t think so, I was a last minute sub again for this LAN.

You were both in Unity for a while together. Are you guys going to be in proper teams going forward into 2018?

kas: I know I will definitely, I don’t know about Dylan.

deKayy: Eventually I’ll get back into it if it’s not sooner rather than later, but I’m not quite sure now.

Do you think there was anything else you could have done to have beaten Nobodys here? If you were on a team would you have beaten them?

deKayy: I think when the individual skill comes out from players and shines through, and you go in confident with your game plan set out, regardless of what it is, you can definitely take a series off them. They bleed. They’re amazing but they bleed.

Do you have any particular set out roles in your team?

kas: No we’re just freestyling. Everyone does whatever they want.

So two awps, three awps…

kas: Exactly everyone can awp. Like on overpass ct side I wasn’t even awping. I just gave the awp to eLe because he was more confident and I’d rather rifle where I play on mid because it’s way better with a rifle than an awp.

We saw that Different Gravy were also at One Tap LAN three weeks ago, but you weren’t there kas. Was there a reason for that?

kas: Yea I had some family issues in Poland so I had to go. Couldn’t attend basically.

You would have been there if not for that?

kas: Exactly.

We don’t know when the next LANs are apart from RAID a few months into next year. Are there any plans for you guys to go to any UK LANs or are you just going to be playing lots of online stuff until then?

deKayy: I’d definitely go to the UK LANs but you kind of need a lot of preparation because it’s a big commitment for us. Going last minute wouldn’t be worth it.

We’ve seen a few Irish players do well in international line-ups. Is that something you would entertain at all, or do you always want to play in the Irish scene.

deKayy: I’ve definitely thought about it just because I’ve found I learn quicker from playing with better players. So I’ve entertained the idea yea, but it’s just a matter of putting it into practise and looking for it.

kas: Definitely yea, but if I did I think I’d go with Polish players because I speak Polish.

Wasn’t the original NSG lineup speaking Polish?

kas: No, that was just a meme created by someone. I think we had three foreigners but we didn’t speak the same language.

About the event in general. You have had two days here, non byoc. What do you think about it. Have you been affected by the background noise at all? Just general thoughts about Celtic Throwdown.

deKayy: The background noise actually played into a crucial round we won on cache that I think turned the tide of the game. They were screaming over Street Fighter or something and Ross was like “Rush B, Rush B” and we caught them off guard and took the round.

Was there any reason the background noise helped there?

deKayy: It just masked the footsteps and they had no idea we were five rushing in.

So it’s kind of an extra meta-game introduced.

deKayy: Yea.. The delays on the first day at least hindered my performance going into the games. Waiting around for a few hours. When you finally get in you’re not as focused as you should be.

You didn’t have any problems with the PCs? I know Smooney was having a few monitor problems but was that it for your team.

deKayy: PCs were great, monitors were great. Smoother than at home. Kind of wish I had them.

Do you prefer the non-byoc format?

deKayy: I prefer the convenience but there’s been issues with both non-byoc I’ve went to. Looking back a G-Series and One Tap LAN when you have your own computer there you can just sit down and play all day.

So it’s just a case of if everything was sorted…

deKayy: It would be perfect, bringing my computer up was such a hastle.

kas: Especially for him because he’s from Galway.

Any last words, shoutouts, callouts or anything else?

kas: Good games.

deKayy: Good games to Nobodys, next LAN they won’t win it.
