Irish Pro League 2017 Finals: Calvin “Calvoo” Hynes Interview
This interview was audio recorded on the morning of the 2nd of September.
We’re here with Calvoo formerly of Bazooka Esports. Introduce yourself and tell us what org you are playing for now with your team.
Calvoo: I’m Calvin Hynes also known as Calvoo. Currently playing under Acquire Esports, so we’re under a two week trial period just to see how things go between the two of us and hopefully then we get picked up and we can mutually benefit from that.
Run us down your roster.
Calvoo: The current roster is myself, veKJ, Stitch, he calls himself DeVL at the moment but he’s also known as Craggers…
And what do you call him?
Calvoo: Craig.., and last is jas.
Have you guys been a team for long?
Calvoo: The core three of us, me, Craig and Stitch have been playing for three – four months together. We’ve recently picked up jas and veKJ after we removed the previous two players on our team FL3M1NG and FloTak.
Was there any reason for the change in direction there?
Calvoo: We just felt that to move forward and to progress more we needed to make changes to the roster.
Did you guys attempt for either roster to qualify for this event?
Calvoo: We did but scheduling was an issue as previously FL3M1NG was away, Craig was away in Tenerife, I think FL3M1NG was in Portugal at the time so we had to use two stand-ins and unfortunately it just resulted in us now being able to practise. Obviously with stand-ins you can’t practise as much so we ended up not qualifying for this event.
Are you guys playing in anything also at the moment?
Calvoo: At the moment we’re just practising, grinding for RAID LAN coming up, ESEA open coming up and there’s talk of us doing ESL weekly’s jut to practise some more.
It’s a while until the next confirmed LAN event. I think RAID is the only one, a few months into 2018. Are you going to any UK events between now and then?
Calvoo: Unless Insomnia sixty two is very early in the year, then No there will be nothing beforehand.
You are here on day one of Celtic Throwdown though. In what capacity are you attending this event?
Calvoo: I’m here as a spectator but DeanjB asked me to hop in as a coach for one or two of the matches so I’ve just been hopping into TeamSpeak helping out with that.
Are you giving motivational or strategical inputs?
Calvoo: Kind of more of a sixth voice. Feeding information when information is not being fed in. Helping the IGL look at the money side of things and economy in general. I think that takes a lot of stress off the IGL and lets them relax a bit more.
You’ve been coming to events for a while now. Do you feel that your new team you have assembled is your best yet? Is this the trajectory you want to be going in?
Calvoo: Aim wise, this is the best roster I’ve been on. At the moment we’ve only started practising one map, so we are slowly making progress and it feels like this is the best roster that I’ve been on. Hopefully we can get the results to prove it.
You’ve been watching a few of the games. How do you think the rosters are going to do and who do you think the final two teams are going to be?
Calvoo: Probably Nobodys and Different Gravy. They’re the best two teams here. Player wise, and just statistically they’ve shown the best results so far.
Could you edge it to either of those or is it too close to call?
Calvoo: I think Nobodys will win the event in the end, they kind of have a history of doing it. It could be a close match as the finals in a best of three. Nobodys will probably take that.
Any final words, shoutouts, callouts, etc.
Calvoo: Shoutout to Dmi3 for getting me the ticket for this today. That’s all.
