GamerCon 2017: Fiachra “FiggYs” O’Higgins Interview

This interview was audio recorded on the morning of the 19th of March prior to the tournament day 2 kicking off.

Here with the predominant awper in the Irish scene, Fiachra ‘FiggyS’ O’Higgins. We’re at the start of day 2, the business end of the tournament. How many games have you actually played so far?

We’ve played 1 and a half.

A bit like the Valve major style event we have here. 1 game a day.

Except we only have 2 days to play, instead of 5.

You played half a game against DEG yesterday. Had you prepared for them prior to the tournament?

No, we haven’t prepared for any Irish team specifically, but we’ve prepared on 4 out of the 7 maps because we looked at our odds and everything except from the final is bo1 which means we pretty much have to play one of our maps, so we sort of took a very methodical view to practise.

I mentioned last night that since you stopped last night half way through your game that you would be going onto the T side of overpass. You were down 7-8. So my question to you would be, would you not spend a few hours last night / this morning pulling up new strats for the T side of overpass since you know what is coming up.

Honestly, I think if we had changed anything prior to the game it would have just confused us so we’re just gonna play our own game.

You’ve prepared overpass before the event?

Yea overpass is one of our maps. We have a sufficient amount of executes. There is only one thing we want to change up and it’s to stay away from their stay player, which is obviously nyreen. We just saw from playing against him. We just saw on our CT side that we was destroying all of our game plans. So we think it’s probably best to stay away from where he’s playing on the CT side. That’s the only thing we plan on changing.

Your thoughts on the event in general, the pc’s surroundings, etc.

The PCs are fine when they work, but I’m very disappointed that I only got to play one game, but I’m enjoying the event in general. But I’m really enjoying the event for meeting loads of new and old faces. They are obviously trying to make the best of a bad situation. In a perfect world this would be the finals, there would be the show match going on in a few hours. But they are doing their best to keep everything under control, but it’s a big disappointment that everything got delayed. I had to wait 6 hours waiting for internet yesterday.

Have you been downstairs to the exhibition at all?

Yea, I think it’s pretty cool. I’m mainly upstairs though, staring at the mainstage because I’m supposed to get into the show match. I’m not sure if it’s going ahead though.

It’s pretty much the biggest stage any Irish CS player will have ever played on.

That’s exactly why I’m looking forward to it so much. It would be so much experience also, even looking at the players like CINDER and conoR who should be playing.

Should be good exposure for the game also.

Yea, agreed.

You’ve been in this team maybe a month or so, is that right?

Since January.

Was this a team just for this event, have you been playing online leagues, are you planning on attending other events?

At the moment, I’m going to insomnia 60 in Birmingham with a mix, and as far as teaming beyond that event I’m not quite sure.

Any Irish players going in that mix to i60?

It’s myself, Wombat, Shady, Nuclear and Whisky, none of those players are Irish though.

Any teams or players you’ve picked out from the tournament you expected to perform, someone you are worried about in general?

From us I think Frizz is the big turning factor as far as our team is concerned. If you look back at our game against Moral earlier, he was keeping up, I had 27 he had 26 at the end of the game. If he hadn’t shown up we would have lost the game. And then from other teams, probably the scariest player is obviously conoR who everyone knows already. Players who are unknown who I think are going to be quite scary… I’d be looking out for players on mixes. I’d say digs is probably one of the better people who is mixing. Yesterday they pulled out a huge upset against NotAMix. They beat them 16-13. So I think those guys were overlooked. Digs had a monster game.

Do you want to give me a rundown of the players on your team?

Firstly me, FiggyS, awp. Then we have Michael Doyle ‘micke’, he’s entrying. Bobby O’Reilly ‘BobbyInABoat’, IGL. Sean Kennedy ‘towls’ is support and then we have ‘frizz’, Sean Doyle who’s secondary awp / lurk.

You’ve been warming up on aim_botz for the last 10 minutes or so. Is that your go to warmup routine, Do you do the Hiko challenge?

Normally I do 10 minutes of aim_botz just to get my hands warm because it’s freezing outside, then I do depending on the time at home about on hour of deathmatch before I start playing scrims. On days when we’re not playing I’ll do it in the evening also. I think at LAN you have to have a different view towards everything due to scheduling, and I can’t just hop out and take a break if I’m tilted. You have to continue playing.

Which team is most likely to shuffle after this event? Is it just going to be a huge Irish shuffle like there is after every event?

DEG, if they lose to us I think they’ll fold.

I don’t know if they can hear us, they’re sitting across from us right now. They have a player coming from abroad so…

Freddy is obviously moving back to Sweden in April, so that’s one player they’re going to be looking for unless they want to play with him and not LAN in Ireland. Then I don’t think nyreen will come back to Ireland just because of how bad the LAN went and how many games he has played. Then if you look at the core 3, nLINE, Dean and Pachenko, they’ve been through 5 iterations. They’ve dropped each other; G-Series 8, Dean told me they dropped Pachenko for any other players they could get.

They’ve been getting a lot of shade for that online as well.

They’re all star players, some of the best in the Irish scene but all of them have different views on how to play the game. Pachenko is known for playing bot maps, nLINE is known for his flashy aim and Dean is known for being an all-around player. All their mind sets are combining and it’s creating tension within the team.

Who is going to win the event?

Nobody’s.

Any shoutouts you want to make.

I’m gonna plug my own twitter and the orgs, @FiggyCSGO and @PhelanGaming. And to all the new players who came and are disappointed, I think they should all try again, not to be turned away from Irish LANs because of one bad LAN. I was talking to ventake and some others who got stomped 2-0 because they got bad seeds, I think they shouldn’t turn away from CS or just LANing in general after going out in groups. Everyone needs to start somewhere

I can tell you that the 4 guys I came to the event with only got to play two games but they really enjoyed it.

I started back in G6, I didn’t even win 16 rounds in total when I played in a mix with Staples. He joined a day before the event when our fifth dodged.

There was a bit of that at this event as well I heard.

Yea I heard, I’m not sure if it was Prometheans or other guys, but then 3 LANs later I came third with DEG so keep grinding away and hopefully you get the LAN win eventually. I’ve been doing it for 3 years and nothing has happened but you never know.

That is our last interview from GamerCon 2017. We will be back with more content including interviews at the next Irish CSGO Lan and will be publishing other content in the meantime so stay tuned.
